Certificated Membership

Certificated membership is open to all practising Upholsterers.

It is only available to an individual person. Not to an employer, company or organisation.

The Guild are the only upholstery based body in the UK that tests its members for both handskills and knowledge for membership.

Applicants must submit for membership in three parts:

  1. Applicants must offer a set of 24 photographs of a single piece of furniture which has been traditionally upholstered within the previous year of the application date. Photographs must show the whole process from start to finish, with clear pictures of each major stage of work. The examination committee will then assess the work and  if deemed of a high standard will then offer the applicant to sit the following two tests.

  2. Upon successful completion of part one, applicants will be required to submit a traditionally upholstered circular shaped stool top to specific guidelines. The examination committee will then inspect the piece and award marks. A mark of 75% must be achieved to complete this part of the process.

  3. Applicants must complete a written test of 25 short questions all based on upholstery and furniture history. A mark of 60% must be achieved to complete this part of the process.

Upon completion to the satisfaction of the  Committee, successful applicants will then be awarded certificated membership and the use of the Guild logo.

Members are then retested six years after completion of first certification.

Yearly fee £60
